401(k) Calculator formula
Employee contributions equal the selected salary percentage subject to the projected elective-deferral and catch-up limits. Employer match follows the entered match formula and the annual additions and compensation limits.
Contributions and employer match are deposited monthly at month end. Future IRS limits are estimates grown by the editable annual limit increase.
Assumptions and limitations
- The calculator begins with the 2026 IRS limits shown in the fields; future limits are estimates rather than official IRS adjustments.
- The special catch-up amount applies at ages 60 through 63, while the general catch-up applies from age 50 in other eligible years.
- Non-catch-up employee and employer additions are capped together; eligible catch-up contributions are outside that cap.
- Plan terms may provide a smaller match or impose other restrictions. Taxes, fees, loans, hardship withdrawals, and tax owed at distribution are excluded.

Worked example
Example: 10% contribution with a 50% employer match
A 35-year-old earning $80,000 contributes 10% of salary. The employer matches 50% of contributions up to 6% of eligible salary, while salary grows 3% annually.
The projection applies the 2026 limits, age-based catch-up rules, a 7% nominal return, and editable future limit growth through retirement at age 67.
