RMD Calculator formula
Estimated RMD = prior December 31 account balance ÷ life expectancy divisor. Uniform-table projections grow the remaining balance by the entered return, subtract the estimated RMD, and use the next age divisor.
Choose a custom divisor and one projection year when the Uniform Lifetime Table does not apply. A spouse more than 10 years younger who is the sole beneficiary generally uses the Joint and Last Survivor Table.
Assumptions and limitations
- Uniform Lifetime Table divisors are provided for ages 72 through 120 and older from IRS Publication 590-B.
- The account return is applied once annually for a planning projection; actual timing, returns, and withdrawals differ.
- The result does not calculate inherited IRA distributions, first-year timing choices, QCD treatment, taxes, or penalties.
- The calculator supplies a divisor but does not determine the account owner’s required beginning date.
- Use a separate calculation for each account when required and confirm aggregation rules with the custodian or tax adviser.

Worked example
Example: age 75 with a $246,000 prior-year balance
The IRS Uniform Lifetime divisor for age 75 is 24.6. Divide the prior December 31 balance of $246,000 by 24.6.
The estimated RMD is $10,000, or about $833.33 per month if spread evenly. Distribution timing can differ as long as the applicable annual amount is completed by the deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Which balance is used for an RMD?
The usual calculation starts with the retirement account balance on December 31 of the preceding year, adjusted only when IRS rules require it.
When should I use a custom divisor?
Use it when an applicable IRS worksheet or table gives a divisor different from the Uniform Lifetime Table. Keep the projection to one year and enter that official divisor.
Does this calculate inherited IRA withdrawals?
No. Beneficiary distribution rules depend on the original owner, beneficiary type, dates, and other facts, so inherited accounts are outside this calculator.
